Putting wood on a base spring under a matress will just make a firmer system. Cant think how you would flip a mattress spring upside down in any case but if its worn, it will be equally worn upside down.

It should be okay to do. Sometimes, the bottom of the mattress spring is not as well-covered as the top, so I’d put a fitted sheet over it before putting the mattress on top–just to make it look nicer. I realize it might not ever be seen, so it certainly wouldn’t be necessary.
