I went with the middle-of-the-road. We didn't get the cheapest, and we didn't get the most expensive. And that's worked great! Ours was $70 maybe? We prefer our babies sleep on firm mattresses, because we think it is better for their backs. Also, we choose firm over soft because if the baby happens to turn onto his/her stomach during the night, we don't worry as much about suffocation as we would if the baby were to by lying on a soft mattress. If they are listed, there is probably a HELP section. You could email them and explain your problem, and they will refine their instructions or tell you step by step. They will deal with the makers, and you can't be the only customer to be having trouble with the directions for assembly! Call them, and have a salesperson walk you through that last, difficult bit! I eventually took mine off because we kept hitting the holds when we would sit down (we had a cheap thin mattress)the mattress would stay in place after a couple weeks. I hope this helps.
